Is Your Home Ready for Winter?

As the weather starts to cool down, it’s time to get your home ready for winter. Here are some home maintenance tips to ensure your home is prepared for the colder weather.

Weather strip Windows
Weather stripping windows and door frames is a simple and effective way to save energy and money. You may have installed weatherstripping during the summer to keep the heat out and cold air in. In the fall, weather stripping works the other way; it seals in warm air while keeping out the winter cold. By keeping warm air inside during colder months, there’s less strain on your air conditioner. Check the existing weather stripping for wear and tear, and reapply as needed.

Clean and test the ceiling fans
Ceiling fans can help you feel comfortable with the thermostat set to a lower level. Clean your ceiling fans and test them to make sure they work. If you had reversed your ceiling fans for the summertime, remember to switch them back.

Inspect your roof shingles
Have a professional inspect your roof shingles for signs of damage. If there is damage from wind or hail, contact a roofing professional to start the repair work. Some shingle manufacturers, like TAMKO Building Products,Inc. have special programs and certifications for contractors who educate themselves on the company’s products and meet certain criteria. Clean the gutters and downspouts
Remove any leaves and other debris that may have collected in your gutters and downspouts during the spring and summer. De-clogging the gutters ensures rainwater can properly divert off the roof come time for winter weather.
